There are many scam companies today that are trying to benefit from the despair of people who are drowning in debt. These companies feed off of the desperation of these people who see no way out of their debt situation through the way they are currently trying to handle it. The credit repair programs that are offered by these scam companies give amazing claims about that person's future credit scores, and often give one hundred percent guarantees that their bad credit will be removed from their credit reports. The truth is the reputable credit repair programs can help people to get out from under a high debt burden and can negotiate with creditors so that the amount that needs to be repaid can be lessened. They can also give advice to the consumers who are struggling so that, if there is something inaccurate on a credit report, they can get it removed.
Credit Repair Scams - Warning Signs
One warning sign of a credit repair program that is not to be trusted is one that advises consumers to get a different identity for their credit reports. They may advise consumers to get an employer identification number to use instead of their social security number so that they can have a 'new' credit identity. They might also advise consumers to dispute all of the creditor information on the credit report to try and get it removed, even if they know that all of it is accurate.
These are terrible pieces of advice and should not be followed. If a credit repair program advises in any of these ways, the person should immediately quit the program and seek help elsewhere. The reason for this is that by following these fraudulent suggestions, the consumer can find himself in legal trouble. It is a federal crime to lie about credit and is also a crime to apply for an employer identification card under false pretenses. If the person does these things, they can be taken to court and charged with mail fraud or wire fraud since the information that they are providing is false.
The credit repair programs should also be avoided if they require that the person pay them up front for the services. This is not the way that these credit repair programs are legally required to handle things. They can only receive payment for the services that they have provided after the fact, so that the consumer does not have to pay if the provider does not follow through on their claims.
