Why Bankruptcy Can Lead To Couples Divorcing

By Credit Help

Bankruptcy does not just ruin people financially. It robs their inner pride and self confidence and it destroys marriages ...

If a married couple makes it through the legal complications of filing bankruptcy with their marriage intact, then they have a much tighter marriage than most. Then again, they may just be going through the motions and sooner or later everything in the house of cards will come tumbling down. After all, the fate of this couple has been somewhat unpredictable and their track record to date is certainly not indicative of a successful financial marriage, it really is only a matter of time before the marriage begins to crumble and the cards as well as anything and everything else comes tumbling down.

When a couple divorces after a bankruptcy, it is often because they have truly lost respect for one another. If the husband was the sole bread winner who requested that his wife stay at home with the children, then she will likely be bitter at the controlling husband who not only held her back in her career aspirations but also in her community status when he let her down by filing bankruptcy. Bitterness is often too overwhelming to ever overcome especially if there is a considerable age difference between the husband and wife and the woman feels the man let her down personally. She may also begin to feel she gave her husband the gift of marrying a youthful bride and he couldn't support her. Would you like to know the next thought that will eventually pass the mind of this young woman? You guessed it! "If he won't take care of me, someone else will."

Then there really is the issue of losing all respect for one another. Once one partner throws the respect issue up to her significant other, it is usually over. Men and women both would like to think their partners have respect for them and if they find out the other one does not, then it is a divorce in the making. Bankruptcy is usually the straw that breaks the camel's back so to speak and after it's a done deal then the whole world will know the couple could not manage their finances together as a couple and will likely feel like it is time to let their lives go in different directions. A woman can move on with little consequences from the bankruptcy because her name will change and unless she is in a small town, then many people won't notice.

Bankruptcy doesn't just ruin people financially. It robs their inner pride and self confidence and it destroys marriages.

What leads a couple to bankruptcy is anybody's guess. It is usually the inability to manage or budget effectively but often it is because of mounting credit card debt. If the wife caused the debt while the husband was totally unaware, then it is likely the blame will be pointed at her and then a big problem will begin brewing. Really, if any blame is pointed in the direction of one spouse or the other in bankruptcy, then it is likely the other one will build up resentment. When this happens, they will never let go of it and ultimately, the fate is then determined for the marriage. The bankruptcy ended all of the couple's dreams and aspirations so why not seal the fate of the couple as a couple too?

As a couple, it is not only hard to file bankruptcy but it is often hard to look at the other person who you feel equally shared in the financial demise of the relationship. When that happens, divorce and bankruptcy is usually the blended cocktail waiting to be stirred.

A bad credit record can make it tough to get a loan or adequate insurance, find a good job, or rent an apartment. Yet, nearly half of all credit records contain serious errors.

The new edition of "The Credit Repair Kit" provides consumers with all the information they need to order a copy of their credit record, understand what their records say about them, and deal with any problems they may find in those records.

Nationally known bankruptcy attorney John Ventura also educates readers about their legal rights under the federal "Fair Credit Reporting Act."

Among other things, "The Credit Repair Kit" tells readers how to:

  • Fight back if a credit bureau will not correct an error in a credit record, including how to sue a credit bureau or creditor.
  • Rebuild credit after financial difficulties.
  • Avoid becoming the victim of identity theft and credit-rebuilding scams.
  • Interpret a credit score.

With identity theft on the rise, "The Credit Repair Kit" also advises consumers about the steps they should take to preserve the privacy of their personal and financial information and what to do if their identity is stolen.

With practical tips, sample credit reports, checklists, and information about helpful Web sites and organizations, Ventura provides readers with a first-aid kit for credit record problems.
