A dramatic drop in income during a recession can spell financial disaster for some people and you are not exactly immune to these things. When you suddenly find yourself saddled with too many debts and your prospects of paying your debts is rather dim, bankruptcy may be the best of option for you. Yes, filing for bankruptcy will hurt your credit scores but when you run out of options, you just have to close your eyes and take the plunge.

Before you go to a bankruptcy lawyer, you need to read whatever bankruptcy information that you can find. There are plenty of bankruptcy information that you can find both online and offline. If you have a computer with internet connection at home, search for bankruptcy information online. This way, you get to save yourself from all the trouble of going to a bankruptcy information center and getting all those bulky bankruptcy information materials from them. Wouldn't it be easier to just simply go to a lawyer and ask him or her for bankruptcy information? Yes you can always go to a lawyer and ask for bankruptcy information but that is going to cost your some money. Remember that lawyers bill their clients by the hour so if you do not have the money to spare for that kind of thing, you might as well do your own research. Don't worry, there are a lot of ways to get the right bankruptcy information without spending do much money.
Working On Your Bankruptcy Petition
If you decide to go through bankruptcy proceedings after reading those bankruptcy information materials, you need to prepare your petition to the court. You may need to hire a lawyer at this point to help you write your petition and file it in court. Having a lawyer will save you from all the troubles of going through all the paper works. On the other hand, if you feel that you can handle all the paper works on your own, go to your local bankruptcy court and ask for bankruptcy forms. Fill up these forms and file it in court.

October 17, 2005 saw the new guidelines to the bankruptcy code. Since the large amount of debt was beginning to cause a strain on the economy, these changes were long overdue because of the widespread abuse of the system. The new code and guidelines strive to change irresponsible behaviors and discourage the number of bankruptcy filings without an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the event. Hopefully, debtors will re-evaluate their spending habits and financial management capabilities before rushing to the bankruptcy court.
